NHL Signing: Minnesota Wild, Jason Pominville Agree To Five Year Contract Extension
Jason Pominville has signed a five-year, $28 million contract extension with the Minnesota Wild, according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune.
He wanted to have an extension in place before the start of the regular season and he got that along with the term he was seeking. Pominville’s deal will have an average annual value of $5.6 million. He was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres last April and recorded nine points in 10 games before suffering a concussion.
“I’m excited to be part of this group for the next six years,” Pominville said. “We can say that this is home now.”
“At the end of the day, based on the market we’ve seen in the last couple months it’s a fair market contract for a good hockey player,” Fletcher said. “But more importanatly than that, to me it’s exciting that he wanted to commit to us. He only played 10 regular season games for us and a couple playoff games, so the fact that he’s willing to commit for basically the next six seasons to our club to me sends a strong message that he believes in the direction we’re going and by the same token we’re thrilled to have him.”

NHL News: Gustav Nyquist, Dan Boyle, Adam Foote, Evgeni Malkin
- Gustav Nyquist and the Detroit Red Wings are making progress in their contract discussions, according to Mlive.com. “We’ve done a lot of talking in the last couple of weeks,” GM Ken Holland said. “I anticipate getting it done. We’re close on a one-year, talking two years.” Nyquist reportedly would prefer two years, but the two sides aren’t quite seeing eye-to-eye on dollar value so he may have to settle for a one-year deal.
- Dan Boyle and the San Jose Sharks have had discussions about a contract extension, according to CSN Bay Area. The veteran defenseman has one year left on his present contract and is set to earn $6.67 million. Boyle’s agent, George Bazos, said that Boyle wants to remain in San Jose and he believes that he can be an effective player until he’s 40. The 37-year-old blueliner had 20 points in 46 games last year and he accounted for eight points in 11 playoff contests. Bazos didn’t rule out the possibility that something could get done before the start of the season.
- Adam Foote will have his No. 52 jersey retired by the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, November. 2. He played 17 of his 19 NHL seasons with the Avalanche/Nordiques and is the second-highest scoring defenseman in the franchise’s history with 259 points in 967 games. Foote was also part of the team’s Stanley Cup victories in 1996 and 2001.
- Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill said the Dallas organization has not been involved in any tampering with Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin, the Dallas Morning News reports. “We have seen the reports that have surfaced out of Russia claiming that we have tampered and they are completely untrue,” Nill said in a statement. While on the other side The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Evgeni Malkin reiterated Tuesday via a text message that he wanted “only to play for Pittsburgh.” His agent, J.P. Barry, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that negotiations between his client and the Penguins was “super smooth because both sides wanted to get something done quickly.”

No Progress In Contract Talks Between Toronto Maple Leafs And Nazem Kadri
There has not been any progress in contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and restricted free agent Nazem Kadri, according to the Toronto Sun.
“The closer and closer camp comes, the more of a distraction it is to me,” Kadri admitted.
“But I’m confident we’ll come up with something. I know both parties want to get something done, it’s just a matter of them getting some things together and putting the team back where it was. We have a solid foundation, a great group of guys and no one wants to leave.”
The Leafs may choose to sign Kadri, and fellow RFA Cody Franson, and trim down their cap total after training camp. The club could also give Kadri a one-year “bridge” contract before investing more years and salary into the 22-year-old center. In the meantime, Kadri has been working hard with Toronto’s power skating instructor, Barb Underhill, and he has been practicing faceoffs as well.

P.K. Subban Not Focused On Expiring Contract
According to TSN.ca, P.K. Subban isn’t looking beyond this coming season and his expiring contract.
“I still have a season to my contract and I intend to honor it,” Subban said. He inked a two-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens shortly after the season began, following the lockout, and will be a restricted free agent next summer. Subban captured the Norris Trophy for the 2012-13 campaign and if he can follow up that performance with another impressive year then he will be due for a substantial pay raise.

Group Lead By Joshua Harris Getting Closer To Purchasing New Jersey Devils
The group headed by Joshua Harris is getting closer to buying the New Jersey Devils from Jeff Vanderbeek, multiple sources tell Tom Gulitti of The Record.
Harris’ group already owns the NBA’s 76ers. There was a Philadelphia radio report earlier Friday that said Harris’ group had agreed to a purchase price which would cover all of Vanderbeek’s debt, which reportedly is hundreds of millions of dollars. Gulitti reports that all interested parties, including a group led by attorney Andrew Barroway, agreed to a price weeks ago, but nothing is “done.” There are a lot of moving parts in the sale, which is expected to continue the Prudential Center. The Devils and the NHL are hopeful of finalizing a deal by the start of the season.

No Contact Extension Talks Between New York Islanders And Matt Moulson
Matt Moulson and the New York Islanders haven’t had any talks regarding a contract extension for the left winger, according to Newsday’s Arthur Staple.
Moulson is entering the final year of his contract, but the 29-year old told Staples a new deal isn’t on his radar. “Thats what I pay my agent for. I’m going to try to help this team win games and make sure my mind’s on that,” Moulson said. Moulson has had a bit of a coming-out party over the past two seasons, scoring 51 goals and 113 points while skating on the Isles’ top line with John Tavares. Even if they haven’t started talks yet, we’d be surprised if the Isles didn’t at least have some sort of conversation fairly soon.

No Update On Contract Talks Between New York Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist And Derek Stepan
New York Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton said there’s no update on the team’s contract talks with Henrik Lundqvist and Derek Stepan, according to Andrew Gross.
Lundqvist is entering the final season of his deal, while Stepan is currently a restricted free agent. Gorton wouldn’t rule out continuing talks with Lundqvist and his reps during the season and beat writer Andrew Gross pointed out Lundqvist’s last contract extension was finalized in January during the season. According to Gross, Gorton sounded confident regarding deals for both players, but the Rangers are running out of time with Stepan.

New Jersey Devils Likely To Be Sold “Within The Next Several Days”
The New Jersey Devils will likely be sold “within the next several days,” according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
The Devils’ ownership issues have come to a rapid boil as we’ve had varying reports from multiple outlets within a 24-hour span, including talk of a Coyotes-like NHL takeover of the Devils.
Josh Harris and the group that owns the NBA’s 76ers are reportedly interested in the Devils, as is a group led by attorney Andrew Barroway. Barroway’s group reportedly had a sale agreement last month but stepped back from the negotiating after getting a closer look at the team’s financial records. The one thing that’s become clear is current owner Jeff Vanderbeek vastly underestimated the resources he would need to be the primary owner of the club. Regardless of who buys the Devils, Vanderbeek is expected to be completely bought out. The franchise is also not expected to relocate.

NHL Will Reportedly Take Over Ownership And Operations Of New Jersey Devils
The NHL will likely take over the New Jersey Devils near the start of the 2013-14 season unless a serious buyer for the team steps up before then,according to Forbes.
This morning we posted that Joshua Harris and the owners of the NBA’s 76ers had joined the bidding process alongside a group led by attorney Andrew Barroway.
Current owner Jeff Vanderbeek, who bought out his partners last year, reportedly missed a loan payment earlier this year. According to Forbes, the NHL doesn’t want the Devils to file for bankruptcy like the Phoenix Coyotes were forced to several years ago. The report states the NHL would own and operate the Devils franchise like they did with the Coyotes until a permanent buyer is found. Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly both denied the reports, but they also denied that the Devils were in any sort of financial trouble only a few weeks ago.

NBA’s 76ers Owners Join Bidding To Purchase New Jersey Devils
According to NorthJersey.com, Joshua Harris and the owners of the NBA’s 76ers have joined the bidding to purchase the New Jersey Devils.
The Devils ownership saga has been inching toward this point for a while, but the process appears to have been accelerated by Vanderbeek’s financial issues following the lockout.
According to Gulitti, Harris’ group joined the fray after a sale agreement with a group led by attorney Andrew Barroway fell through last month. The report says Barroway’s group is still very much involved in the bidding process despite the previous agreement expiring. Barroway’s deal would reportedly increase his stake over time until current owner Jeff Vanderbeek was a minority owner. It’s unknown what sort of role, if any, Vanderbeek would have if Harris were to purchase the team.
